About This Production:
Shrek The Musical brings the hilarious story of everyone’s favorite ogre to life on stage. When Shrek sets out to rescue Princess Fiona to reclaim his swamp, he’s joined by his wisecracking sidekick Donkey. Along the way, they encounter a host of fairy-tale misfits and a villain with a big attitude (and short stature), Lord Farquaad. Filled with dazzling music, outrageous humor, and heartwarming moments, this Tony Award-winning musical celebrates friendship, love, and embracing who you truly are.

Roles:

Shrek: Male 25–45 Tenor/Baritone (A2–G#4) Minimal dance (strong physicality, Gruff, funny, tender)
Fiona: Female 20–30 Soprano/Mezzo (F3–G5) Moderate dance, good movement (Spirited, quirky, strong singer)
Donkey: Male 20–35 Tenor (C3–B4) Moderate dance (high energy, Energetic, hilarious, loyal)
Lord Farquaad: Male 30–45 Tenor (B2–D5 )Minimal dance (strong comedic movement, Pompous, over-the-top, villain)
Dragon: Female 25–45 Alto (F3–Eb5) No dance (powerhouse vocals, Fierce, soulful, attitude)
Gingy: Any 20–40 Tenor/Alto (varies) Minimal dance (Sassy, bold personality)
Pinocchio: Any 20–40 Tenor/Alto (varies) Moderate dance (Dramatic, physical humor)
Fairy-Tale Creatures: Any Teens+Various, Moderate dance, ensemble movement (Colorful, fun, varied roles)

What You Will Learn: 
  • From Ogre to Emotion: Mastering Shrek with Rasas
  • Rasa Boxes
  • How to embody the nine Rasas—the core emotional states in Indian theatre—through voice, movement, and facial expression.
  • Techniques to access extreme emotions safely, making your performances bold and dynamic.
  • How to translate emotion into physicality, creating characters that are visually expressive and believable.
  • Ways to expand your emotional range and explore feelings you might not normally use onstage.
  • How to enhance ensemble work, using energy, contrast, and presence to make scenes more engaging.
  • Practical exercises to apply Rasas to scenes, monologues, and musical theatre, improving clarity and impact in performance.

Meet Your Instructor: Billie Harvey
I currently serve as the principal of Bangs Middle School, bringing a lifelong passion for education and the arts into my leadership. Prior to administration, I spent 20 years teaching high school theatre, where my students achieved success at the state level in UIL One-Act Play, debate, speech, and prose and poetry. I have directed five mainstage productions and six student summer productions with the Brownwood Lyric Theatre, and previously served on the board of the Abilene Actors Guild, where I directed multiple productions and led numerous theatre workshops. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre and a Master’s degree in History from Hardin-Simmons University, as well as a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Texas at Arlington. I am married to Jonathan Harvey, and we have one son, Samuel, who is graduating high school and preparing to head off to college. I am thrilled to return to the stage this summer as the director of Shrek The Musical.
