This June, Brownwood’s Lyric Theatre presents its annual summer camp for students to learn the basics of acting, theatre, costumes, lighting, stagecraft, props, and more! While attending camp, children who have completed Kindergarten through high school will be cast, directed, and perform before audiences, experiencing the heart of the theater in versatile methods including crafts, media, and hands-on activities.

Students will be split into age-appropriate environments so that all participants not only learn about theatrical activities in a manner suited to their needs, but be part of a professional show. The 2013 theme is “Once Upon A Time.” Combined, the plays offer goofy conundrums, witty tales, and magical moments with a dragon in the mix. Audiences of all ages will experience laughter, mystery, and whimsy as “Law & Order” comes to the land of fairy tales.

Summer Camp will be held at Howard Payne University from Monday, June 3rd through Friday, June 7th, and continues on Monday the 10th through Friday the 14th. Two public performances will be held:  Friday, June 14th at 7:00 PM and Saturday, June 15th at 2:30 PM.

Students in first through third grade will attend camp from 9:00 AM to Noon each day of camp; fourth grade and up will attend from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. Cost for camp is $165 per student, including two weeks of hands-on education, snacks, and a t-shirt.

Registration is limited to 20 per group. Scholarships are available, on a first-come, first-served basis. Forms, payment options and more information are located online at brownwoodlyrictheatre.com or can be picked up at Southside Church (1219 Indian Creek, Brownwood).

Brownwood’s Lyric Theatre announces the opening of its first summer 2013 show, “The Fiddle Jig of Finn O’Flynn.” The show is written and directed by Mr. Nicholas Ewen, the Assistant Professor of Theatre at Howard Payne University.

"The Fiddle-Jig of Finn O'Flynn" is a fun family drama about a young boy, Mitch, as he deals with his brother leaving to fight as a soldier in World War II, a local bully, and the mysterious and magical effects of a strange, fiddle-wielding old man.  It is a story about learning to deal with fear and loss, and finding the magic in music and friendship.  Ewen drew on many of his own family stories, his obsession with Irish folk tales, and his love of fiddle music as inspiration for writing the play.  His own brother, Matt Ewen, also contributed to the creation of the play, having composed and performed the fiddle tune of the title.  “We are so excited to premier this original show as our summer lineup starter,” said Eric Evans, Managing Director for the Lyric Theatre. “Families are going to love the music and characters.”  The play runs about 55 minutes and is appropriate for kids and adults.

In addition to premiering an original script, the Lyric is offering an invitation to children of all ages and their families for Family Night on Thursday, May 23rd, beginning at 6:00 PM. The evening will include tickets to the 7:00 PM performance, dinner of grilled all-beef hot dogs, side items and dessert, and an opportunity to meet characters from “Fiddle Jig,” and the upcoming show, “The Wizard of Oz.” Tickets for Family Night are $5.00 per person.

Tickets for “The Fiddle Jig of Finn O’Flynn” can be purchased at the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce, www.brownwoodlyrictheatre.com, or at the Box Office. All showings cost $5.00 per person and will be held at the Howard Payne University Theatre at the following times: Wednesday, May 22nd -- 9:00 AM, 10:30 AM, 1:00 PM; Thursday, May 23rd --9:00 AM, 10:30 AM, 1:00 PM; 7:00 PM; Friday, May 24th -- 9:00 AM, 10:30 AM, 1:00 PM.
